What's Included

Collection, paperwork, and legal disposal — all handled

Scrapping a vehicle is a legal process with specific requirements — DVLA notification, a Certificate of Destruction, and processing at a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). Get any of this wrong and you can still receive speeding tickets, parking fines, or tax demands in your name long after the car's gone.

All operators on our marketplace are licensed to collect end-of-life vehicles. They handle the V5C paperwork, notify the DVLA, issue your Certificate of Destruction, and ensure the vehicle is processed at a compliant ATF. You hand over the keys and the logbook — everything else is taken care of.

Depending on your vehicle's weight, metal content, and condition, you may receive a scrap value payment. This is confirmed upfront as part of your quote before you commit to anything.

Environmental Responsibility

Disposed of the right way

End-of-life vehicles contain hazardous materials — engine oil, coolant, battery acid, and refrigerants. Disposing of them improperly is illegal and harmful to the environment.

Every vehicle collected through Snap Car Recovery is processed at a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). Hazardous fluids are safely drained and disposed of, catalytic converters and other components are reclaimed where possible, and the remaining metal is recycled — keeping as much as possible out of landfill.

How It Works

Simple from start to finish

01

Request your quote

Tell us your vehicle details — make, model, year, and condition. We'll provide a scrap value estimate and collection quote.

02

Agree price and book collection

Once you're happy with the quote, confirm the booking and choose a collection date that works for you.

03

Operator collects your vehicle

A licensed operator arrives at your location with a transporter and loads your vehicle. You hand over the keys and V5C logbook.

04

Paperwork handled, vehicle disposed of responsibly

The operator notifies the DVLA and issues a Certificate of Destruction. Your vehicle is processed at a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility.

What to Expect

Collection, paperwork, and payment — sorted

Certificate of Destruction issued

By law, every legally scrapped vehicle must receive a Certificate of Destruction from a licensed ATF. This is your proof the vehicle is gone — and protects you from any future fines in your name.

V5C and DVLA paperwork handled

Operators process the V5C logbook on collection and notify the DVLA. You don't need to contact the DVLA separately — just hand over the V5C with the keys.

Scrap value confirmed upfront

The scrap value (if any) is agreed before collection. Heavier vehicles — larger cars, vans, 4x4s — typically have higher scrap value. No surprises on the day.

Non-driveable vehicles collected

SORN'd, end-of-life, and non-running vehicles are all collected. Operators bring flatbed transporters to load vehicles that can't move under their own power.

ATF-compliant disposal

Vehicles are taken to licensed Authorised Treatment Facilities regulated by the Environment Agency. Hazardous fluids removed, parts reclaimed, metal recycled.

UK-wide collection

Operators cover all of mainland UK. Collection is typically arranged within 2–5 working days, with faster options available in many areas.

FAQs

Common questions about scrap collection

What documents do I need to scrap my car?

The main document you need is the V5C logbook (the vehicle registration certificate). When scrapping, complete Section 9 of the V5C and give it to the operator — they'll send the yellow 'sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle' section to the DVLA. If you don't have the V5C, you can still scrap the vehicle but the process is slightly different — you'll need to notify the DVLA separately using a V62 form. Mention if you don't have the V5C when requesting your quote.

Will I get a Certificate of Destruction?

Yes. By law, every vehicle scrapped at a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) must be issued with a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is your proof that the vehicle has been legally disposed of. Keep it safe — it confirms you're no longer responsible for the vehicle and protects you from future fines or liability.

How much will I get for scrapping my car?

Scrap value depends on the vehicle's weight, metal content, and current scrap metal prices. Heavier vehicles — larger cars, vans, 4x4s — generally have higher scrap value. Condition matters less than weight for scrap value, though working parts (catalytic converters, alloy wheels, recent tyres) can add to the offer. The scrap value is quoted upfront before collection — you'll know what you'll receive before agreeing.

Is collection really free?

In most cases, yes — the operator takes the scrap value of the vehicle as their fee for collecting and processing it. For vehicles with low scrap value (very small cars, heavily damaged vehicles, older models with corroded bodywork), there may be a small collection charge. This will be clear in your quote before you commit.

Do I need to SORN the vehicle before scrapping?

You don't need to SORN your vehicle before scrapping — in fact, if you SORN it, the existing tax is cancelled. If your vehicle has a current MOT and tax, these are transferred to the operator's name on collection. The operator notifies the DVLA on your behalf when the vehicle is scrapped, and you'll receive a V5C/3 confirmation that you've sold or transferred the vehicle.

Can you collect a vehicle that doesn't run?

Yes. Non-driveable, SORN'd, and end-of-life vehicles are all collected. Operators bring flatbed transporters capable of loading vehicles that can't move under their own power.

What happens to my vehicle after it's collected?

Your vehicle is taken to a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) where all fluids are safely drained (engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, refrigerants), hazardous materials are removed, usable parts are reclaimed, and the remaining metal is shredded and recycled. ATFs are regulated by the Environment Agency and must meet strict environmental standards.

How quickly can you collect?

Collection is typically arranged within 2–5 working days. Same-day or next-day collection may be available depending on your location and operator availability.
